Henry Tissier, A French pediatrician- Observed that. Children with diarrhea had in their stools a low number of bacteria characterized by a peculiar. Y-shaped morphology.

Regulatory Issues:
(FAO-WHO-2001-Probiotics-Report.)

Regulatory issues:

Every country’s government’s policy is different. The status of probiotics as a component in food is currently not established on an international basis.
For the most part of probiotic arw come under food and dietary supplements because most are delivered by mouth as foods.
These are different from drugs in a number of ways, especially with respect to claims.
Drugs are allowed to claim effectiveness in the treatment, mitigation or cure of a disease, whereas foods, feed additives and dietary supplements can only make general health claims.
In order to understand where probiotic products currently fall in terms of regulatory agencies.
And the claims that can be made with their use, the following US example is provided.
consumers are permitted access to products ingested as pills, capsules, tablets and liquids, or in capsules sold in health food stores or via the internet.

Appropriate labeling:

It clearly writing on the label of a probiotic present in the food.  The researcher recommends that the microbial species be stated on the label.

If a selection process has been undertaken at the strain level the identity of the strain should also be included. Since the probiotic effect seems to be strain specific.
There is a need to accurately calculate the probiotic bacteria in food products. which will be writing on the label?
The label should state the viable concentration of each probiotic present at the end of shelf-life (Reid et al., 2001c).

Manufacturing and handling procedures:

To ensure that any given culture maintains the beneficial properties.
The stock culture should maintain under appropriate conditions. Checked periodically for strain identity and probiotic properties.

Handling and storage of the food product containing the probiotic, and verified at the end of shelf-life.
Adequate quality assurance programs should be in place. Keep Good manufacturing practice. Should follow in the manufacture of probiotic foods.
The Consultation recommends that the Codex General Principles of Food Hygiene and Guidelines for Application of HACCP (CAC, 1997) be followed.

Choosing a probiotic:

Match the strain to the benefit you want – not all. Strains are the same.

Amounts matter. Be sure the product contains the level of probiotics needed for the health benefit.

Probiotics are safe for most people, but talk to your doctor first if you suffer from an immune disorder, have a serious underlying illness or before giving to an infant.

Probiotics vs Antibiotic

By- Mary Ellen Sanders Ph.D

The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) initiated a project this fall to determine if probiotics can reduce antibiotic use. In the context of an individual person, reduced antibiotic use means fewer adverse effects, reduced chance to develop antibiotic resistant pathogens, reduced time to recovery and lower medical cost. In the context of society, reduced antibiotic use means less chance that antibiotic resistant pathogens – which can be difficult to control – will develop and threaten society at large.

Governments are recognizing the importance of policy that improves antibiotic stewardship. For example, European Antibiotic Awareness Day supports national campaigns on the prudent use of antibiotics.

which can be difficult to control – will develop and threaten society at large. Governments are recognizing the importance of policy that improves antibiotic stewardship. For example, European Antibiotic Awareness Day supports national campaigns on the prudent use of antibiotics.

During the 2016 ISAPP meeting in Turku, Finland, Drs. Dan Merenstein from Georgetown University and Irene Lenoir-Wijnkoop from University of Utrecht and Danone Research, led a working group to discuss the strength of evidence to support probiotics for common upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). Probiotics are generally safe and have increasing strength of evidence supporting their role in prevention and reducing duration of common URTIs. Evidence is accumulating but not definitive for the role of probiotics in URTIs.

Available evidence was summarize.. In a Cochrane meta-analysis (Hao et al. 2015), which included 12 studies evaluating the role of probiotics for URTIs. This review found that probiotic use for 3 to 8 months could result in 11 fewer people out of 100 developing an URTI. This review also found moderate quality evidence that taking probiotics reduces the duration of a URTI by close to 2 days.

The financial impact of these effects was considered, through economic models. It was noteworthy that the Cochrane review also suggested that probiotics could reduce antibiotic prescriptions. At a rate of 7 fewer people in 100. This finding prompted a proposal to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis designed with a primary endpoint to determine the impact of probiotics on antibiotic use.

This project is currently underway, supported in part by ISAPP and also by the volunteer efforts of many experts. The results of the study will be published regardless of the findings.

But if robust evidence is found that. Probiotics can reduce antibiotic use. ISAPP will approach authoritative bodies such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The American Academy of Family Physicians. The American academy of Pediatrics and the United States Prevention Services task force with the evidence with the hope of influencing adoption of probiotic as part of recommendations and policy on antibiotic stewardship.

HAIR ! POINT OF VIEW

hair-growth-reviewhow-to-grow-hair

Hair is a protein filament that grows from follicles found in the dermis, or skin. Hair is one of the defining characteristics of mammals. The human body, apart from areas of glabrous skin, is covered in follicles which produce thick terminal and fine vellus hair. Most common interest in hair is focused on hair growth, hair types and hair care, but hair is also an important biomaterial primarily composed of protein, notably keratin.

Attitudes towards different hair, such as hairstyles and hair removal, vary widely across different cultures and historical periods, but it is often used to indicate a person’s personal beliefs or social position, such as their age, sex, or religion.

Classification Of  Hair:

There are various systems that people use to classify their curl patterns. Being knowledgeable of an individual’s hair type is a good start to knowing how to take care of one’s hair. There is not just one method to discovering one’s hair type. Additionally it is possible, and quite normal to have more than one kind of hair type, for instance having a mixture of both type 3a & 3b curls.

HAIR – TYPES

hair-type

TYPE 1 : Straight

1a. Straight (Fine/Thin) — Hair tends to be very soft, shiny, oily, poor at holding curls but difficult to damage.

1b. Straight (Medium)– Hair characterised by volume and body.

1c. Straight (Coarse)– Hair tends to be bone-straight and difficult to curl. Common in Asian women.

TYPE 2 : Wavy

2a. Wavy (Fine/Thin)– Hair has definite “S” pattern and is usually receptive to a variety of styles.

2b. Wavy (Medium)– Can tend to be frizzy and a little resistant to styling.

2c. Wavy (Coarse)– Frizzy or very frizzy with thicker waves; often more resistant to styling.

TYPE 3: Curly

3a. Curly (Loose)– Curly hair that usually presents a definite “S” pattern and tends to combine thickness, fullness, body and/or frizziness.

3b. Curly (Tight)– As 3a but with tighter curling like a spiral.

TYPE 4: Kinky

4a. Kinky (Soft)– Hair tends to be very fragile, tightly coiled and can feature curly patterning.

4b. Kinky (Wiry)– As 4a but with less visible (or no) curly patterning.

4c. Kinky (Wiry)– As 4a and 4b but with almost no defined curl pattern.

BREAKAGE AND OTHER DISORDERS :

hairburst

Hair can be damaged by chemical exposure, prolonged or repeated heat exposure (as through the use of heat styling tools), and by perming and straightening. Oil is harmful To rough hair and for dry scalp as it decreases nourishment for hair leading to split and hair fall.

When hair behaves in an unusual way, or a scalp skin disorder arises, it is often necessary to visit not only a qualified physician, but sometimes a dermatologist, or a trichologist.

Conditions that require this type of professional help include, but are not limited to, forms of alopecia, hair pulling/picking, hair that sticks straight out, black dots on the hair, and rashes or burns resulting from chemical processes. Gel provides a shiny look but dries the hair and makes it rough.

Here are a number of disorders that are particular to the scalp.

Symptoms may include :

1. Abnormal odor
2. Bleeding
3. Bumps
4. Caking skin buildup that appears white or another color than one’s natural skin tone
5. Chafes
6. Clumps of hair falling out
7. Clumpy flakes that do not easily slough off the scalp skin
8. Dandruff and clumps
9. Dry hair & scalp
10. Excessive itchiness that doesn’t go away with a few hair wash, redness of scalp skin
11. Patches of thinning
12. Pus-like drainage
